Hiking in the Franconian Lake District

Offering more than 1500 km of signposted hiking trails, the Franconian Lake District sets perfect grounds for relaxed hiking tours.

The landscape in and around Gunzenhausen with its glistening lake tops, green hills and forests promises to provide an active, relaxed stay close to nature. Discover plant as well as animal wildlife by visiting the “Vogelinsel” (bird island) right by the Altmühlsee lake, or by exploring the exciting agricultural hiking trail. Our region’s “show-off-hiking-trail”, the “Altmühltal-Panoramaweg”, starts in Gunzenhausen and leads you all the way to Kehlheim, through a breathtaking, impressive landscape – the Altmühltal National Park. Or follow the ancient Roman’s footsteps by hiking along either the Limes Trail or the Devil’s Wall Trail.

Limes Hiking Trail

The „Altmühltal-Panoramaweg“ trail runs alongside the river Altmühl, surrounded by sunny fields and wildly romantic cliff landscapes – all the way from Gunzenhausen to Kehlheim. Discover historic towns and villages, former castles, and ancient remains from Roman and Celtic history along the 200km trail. (distance from start to finish: 200km; approximate duration hiking: 10 days)

The „Dr. Heinrich-Eidam“ trail leads you from Gunzenhausen to the Altmühlsee lake on a scenic route along the river promenade. It then guides you through an enchanted forest to the picturesque village of Frickenfelden, and on to the “Burgstall” forest. Following the Limes / Roman route through the forest, you will be passing the „Bismarck Memorial“ on your way towards Gunzenhausen aviation club premises – once there, you will be rewarded by a stunning view of Gunzenhausen and the surrounding lakes, villages and landscape. From there, you can easily navigate your way back to where you started. (distance start to finish: 14km; approximate duration hiking: 3 hrs)

The Agricultural Trail includes visiting an active bee community as well as an ant colony and is located in the village of Unterhambach. You’ll start your hike at the Western village exit. In total, there are 31 exciting stops on the trail, each indicated by an info board providing information on animals, plants, mushrooms and much more. Hard shoulder on approx. 60% of the trail, the rest are field or forest paths. (distance start to finish: 3km; approximate duration hiking: 2 hrs)

Living history and discovering nature – the „Limes Hiking Trail“ starts in Gunzenhausen and finishes in Bad Gögging, after 115 varied and exciting kilometres. The trail is the closest to nature you can get, running alongside the Raetic Limes – the antique border wall, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Fund since 2005 – right through the Altmühltal National Park. En route, hikers encounter countless remains from the region’s Roman past – making the historical experience unique: antique pool sites, reconstructed watchtowers and Limes castells. Moreover, you will be discovering unique landscapes from which you can enjoy breathtaking views all across the Altmühl – Jura – Region. Connecting nature and history in such a realistic, easily approachable way – rounded off by a varied and excellently signposted hiking trail – resembles the new concept of long-distance hiking trails in the Altmühltal Natural Park. Planning and signposting the Limes Hiking Trail was partly funded by EU-Phasing-Out measures (distance start to finish: 115 km).
